The Latest in Intelligent Thinking

23 Aug

A few years ago we were in a B&B in Victoria, Vancouver Island when, totally out of the blue, an American woman to whom we’d been chatting over breakfast came up to us and asked…

“What do the people of Scotland think of us Americans?”

Remember, this was at the height of the George W Bush administration.  I tried to be diplomatic (not one of my strong points) and duck the question but eventually opted for an indirect answer…

“Well…nobody can understand how on earth you could vote for that guy as President!”

She thought about it briefly and replied…

“You have to understand, most Americans are not…”  she hesitated

“how can I put this…are not, eh, world travellers”.

I reflect on this as I ponder the “holier than thou” US hostility aimed at glorious Caledonia.  It’s a good day to be Scottish.

Channel 4 News a few minutes ago.

First item up…Where is Gordon Brown and does Scotland feel ashamed regarding the release of Megrahi and will it cause problems for the Scottish Government.

Second item up.New evidence is dicovered that in addition to waterboarding suspects the CIA have been indulging in mock executions amongst other things.

For what it`s worth, even if Megrahi was guilty, which is highly unlikely,I`d still agree with MacAskill…

I think a lot of people here think the same way…and with collateral damage by way of the loss of civilians in a couple of conflicts in which the western powers have a stake, you would think their politicians and military might have the common sense to keep their gobs shut!
