Thinking Happy Thoughts

14 Jul

After last night’s disappointing excursion to Rick Steins Seafood Restaurant we’re pinning our hopes on tonight’s visit to Restaurant Nathan Outlaw in the village of Rock just across the Camel estuary from Padstow.  As I think optimistic happy thoughts after last night’s debacle I’ll leave you with some suitable photos from our visit to The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Lovely pics. Never been to the Lost Gardens – looks worth rectifying. Are you going to the Eden Project? It’s expensive but worth it IMHO. 😀

The social history of how the gardens came to be lost is fascinating.

Basically the gardeners all went off to the first World War and after the war, with social change altering the lifestyle of the upper classes, the looked after gardens “retreated” back towards the main house and nature swallowed the rest.

The photographs of its early years, followed by those of its “discovery” in the 1990’s were fascinating.

The pineapple house was amazing. No more than a 3m x 3m stone structure sunk into the ground it had channels in the floor where the heating material was shoveled in during the cold winter nights. A young apprentice gardener had to stay up on the night shift filling the channels with fresh horse dung! What a central heating system that would make eh! 😆

We went to the Eden Project last year. J like it – I wasn’t fussed. A bit like Marmite methinks.
